I have been experimenting with alerts and finding strange results. I set up an alert on a shared private group which I added a secondary private email I own as a guest user. The initial 'Chris' wants to create a shared area has been fine, but when I set up an alert the recipient email was getting multiple emails each time a new document was added. I guess you must have enabled Alert Me twice for your SharePoint List/Lib.
